A New Way to Think

MWA LogoDuring these volatile economic times, non-profit leaders realize investing in their development and fundraising efforts is essential to ensuring the current and future success of their organization. But many of these leaders, perhaps you, are concerned with the significant costs required to market for development positions as well as interview and train new personnel - you hope the new hire will be a lasting and positive addition to the team.

Let's be honest - it's a gamble when you hire new staff. Will they work out? Can we afford to invest in full time personnel right now? How can we be assured that your new team member will deliver?

Client Spotlight

In 1981, the Orange Coast Interfaith Shelter (OCIS) was founded to address the seemingly simple needs of homeless families. At that time, providing just the tangibles - food, housing and clothing appeared to be enough. They quickly realized that much more was needed.

Today, OCIS has evolved into a multifaceted emergency shelter and transitional housing program addressing long range needs from shelter to counseling to independece. As one of the oldest and largest shelters in Orange County, OCIS serves more than 2,000 individuals each year. OCIS is structured to respond in a proactive manner to the needs of families and, as a result has been able to expand programs and facilities in a fiscally responsible manner.

We are proud to have OCIS as a client and are honored to have been a part of their growth in recent years.

Laura Miller, Executive Director states,
"Michelle and her team have consistently guided our agency through the unavoidable transitions in today's changing nonprofit world. All nonprofit organizations must make investments in order to maintain success in their communities and the populations they serve, fulfilling their mission statement and surviving the unpredictability of funding."

Thank you Laura! It has been a pleasure working with you and your team.

MWA's Tips for Success

With many non-profits ending the fiscal year in June (which is rapdily approaching), MWA recommends you answer the following questions with your Development team and Board:

1. How much did it cost your organization to put on events last year? Specifically, how much did you raise and more importantly, how much did you spend? If the percentage is greater that 35%, you may want to analyze your spending as this number is a signficant indicator when large foundations are considering funding your program.

2. MWA feels that even in today's tough economy, non profits must still look to the future. How many new foundation targets are you planning to approach in the next fiscal year and what are your strategies? Can you effectively outline how your organization is weathering the economic downturn without compromising your mission?

3. What will our Board look like next year? What are the strengths? What are the weaknesses? How many new Board members will you be inviting to join your organization next year? Why specifically will you be asking them?

We are prepared to help you answer the above with stategies that respect the unique culture of your organization.

Let us help you ensure a successful future.

We hope you have found our first newsletter helpful. As always, please  consider contacting us to discuss your non-profit needs.

Our team stands ready to assist you in meeting your financial and organizational goals.

Sincerely,
